NEW SYSTEM ASSESSES ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE OF AIR NAVIGATION SERVICES
According to the 2021 report by the independent Performance Review Body (PRB) for the Single European Sky (SES), Air Traffic Management (ATM) in nine EU Member States has improved, in environmental terms, while it has declined or remained stable in 10. For the first time, the report uses a traffic light system to indicate environmental performance.

AIR TRAFFIC RECOVERY APPROACHING PRE-PANDEMIC LEVELS
The latest analysis of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has revealed that air transport seat capacity and passenger totals globally have reached an estimated 80% of pre-pandemic levels, with passenger revenue at around 72% of its 2019 high point.

OCEAN CARRIERS ANNOUNCE ADDITIONAL BLANK SAILINGS
This week, shipping analyst Sea-Intelligence reported that container carriers will likely use China’s Golden Week starting on 1st October as an opportunity to pull more capacity from the market, with the number of blank sailings to reach the highest level in years.

AUSTRALIAN PRODUCTIVITY COMMISSION RECOMMENDS REMOVING CARRIERS’ EXEMPTION TO COMPETITION RULES
Earlier this month, the Australian Government’s Productivity Commission released a draft report examining the performance of Australia's maritime logistics system. The Commission investigated the productivity, efficiency and dependability of Australia’s ports and container depts and of the liner shipping services serving the country.

EUROPEAN COMMISSION PRESENTS SINGLE MARKET EMERGENCY INSTRUMENT
On 19 September, the European Commission presented the new Single Market Emergency Instrument (SMEI), a crisis governance framework aiming to preserve the free movement of goods, services and persons and the availability of essential goods and services in the event of future emergencies, to the benefit of citizens and businesses across the EU.

FIT FOR 55 NEGOTIATIONS CONTINUE AS ENERGY CRISIS GAINS MOMENTUM
As the negotiations on the Fit for 55 files are entering the final stages of the decision-making procedure and the energy crisis is gaining more political momentum, the European Commission last week announced two demand reduction targets for electricity, including a binding reduction goal of 5% at peak consumption times, ahead of a difficult winter caused by dwindling gas supplies from Russia.

EC GRANTS €292 MILLION FOR DEPLOYMENT OF ALTERNATIVE FUELS INFRASTRUCTURE
On 13 September, the European Commission has selected 24 projects to receive EU funding to set up alternative fuels infrastructure. Under the second cut-off date of the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF) call for proposals, which closed on 7 June 2022, 24 projects were selected for a total EU grant support of EUR 292.5 million.

CAPACITY RESTRICTIONS ON DUTCH-GERMAN BORDER FOR 1.5 YEARS
New capacity restrictions have been announced for the construction of the third track between Emmerich and Oberhausen (Germany), which will include an 80-week period of limited availability for cross-border train traffic. From the beginning of November 2024 to the end of May 2026, fewer trains will be able to run across this Dutch-German border.
