On 5 September, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) released its global air cargo data for July 2023. This release highlighted a consistent pattern of recovery in growth rates, a trend that has been ongoing since February.

SHIPPING CONTAINER MARKET RETURN TO PRE-COVID LEVELS
After record-high volumes transported by sea in 2022, the first half of 2023 saw the shipping container market return to volumes slightly above 2020 levels, the shipping analyst Container Trade Statistics noted in its last report. This represents a decrease of volumes by -3.6% compared to 2022.

EC EXPERTS VISIT ROMANIA TO STRENGTHEN SOLIDARITY LANES
On 1-2 September, a European Commission team of experts conducted a visit to Romania to discuss strategies for enhancing the capacity of the Danube corridor. The purpose of the visit was to demonstrate the EU’s support for Romania, acknowledging authorities’ and stakeholders’ ongoing efforts and strengthen the Solidarity Lanes.

FIATA WORLD CONGRESS: THE CHANGING CLIMATE OF LOGISTICS
From 3-6 October, the 2023 FIATA World Congress will take place in Brussels. The event, entitled ‘’The Chaing Climate of Logistics” is this year hosted by Forward Belgium, the Belgian Freight Forwarders Association.

EP LEGISLATIVE PROCEEDINGS RESUME
Policymakers went back to Brussels this week to resume legislative work before the end of the legislative term in 2024. A number of files which are important for CLECAT and its members will be discussed and voted in the coming weeks.

SAVE THE DATE: LOGISTICS FOR EUROPE 2023
On 16 November, CLECAT and ESC will host the Logistics for Europe 2023 event, entitled ‘’Partnering Compliance and Competitiveness in the EU - Is it Possible?’’. The event aims to facilitate a constructive dialogue among industry representatives from freight forwarding, customs agents, shippers, and European policymakers to address the challenges faced by the European industry.

CLECAT CALLS FOR A FAIR LEVEL PLAYING FIELD FOR AUSTRIAN FREIGHT FORWARDERS REPRESENTING IMPORTERS FROM OTHER MEMBER STATES
CLECAT has send a letter today to the European Commission urging the Commission to take action against Austria to end rules and practices infringing provisions of EU customs and VAT law which jeopardize a level playing field in the internal market. These practices are unfairly impactingAustrian freight forwarders representing EU established importers which are not VAT-registered in Austria.
