EU GAINS US MARKET ACCESS FOR CERTAIN PLANTS

Producers from 21 EU Member States will soon export specific plants to the US, following the European Commission's successful negotiation to lift US import restrictions. On 12 June 2024, the US recognised 'country free' status for these Member States regarding two plant pests: the Asian long-horned beetle and the Citrus long-horned beetle. This breakthrough, influenced by Executive Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis, allows unrestricted export of plants for planting, benefiting countries like Belgium, Denmark, and the Netherlands. The Commission continues to seek similar recognition for Finland, Austria, and specific pest-free areas in four other Member States. This cooperation underscores the EU-US commitment to agricultural trade safety and quality.
