AIR CARGO DEMAND GROWS BY 13.6% IN JULY

On 28 August, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) released its latest data on global air freight markets, highlighting a strong growth in demand.

Compared to July 2023, total demand, measured in cargo tonne-kilometres (CTKs), increased by 13.6% (14.3% for international operations). This marks the eight consecutive month of double-digit year-on-year growth. Capacity, measured in available cargo tonne-kilometres (ACTKs), increased by 8.3% compared to July 2024 (10.1% for international operations). This increase was primarily due to a 12.8% increase in international belly capacity, driven by strong passenger markets, which balanced the 6.9% growth in international freighter capacity.

European carriers experienced a 13.7% year-on-year growth in air cargo demand in July, with intra-European air cargo increasing by 15.5% year-on-year. Routes between Europe and the Middle East saw demand growing by 32.2% year-on-year, while those between Europe and Asia was up 17.9%.

Mr Willie Walsh, IATA's Director General, indicated that air cargo demand in July experienced a strong growth across all regions, benefitting from growth in global trade. In addition, he noted that the sector was still benefitting from maritime shipping constrains and a booming e-commerce.
