EC APPROVES €8 MILLION SLOVENIAN SCHEME TO SUPPORT RAIL FREIGHT TRANSPORT
On 2 June, the European Commission approved, under EU State aid rules, a €8 million Slovenian scheme to encourage freight transport to shift from road to rail and to remove barriers to interoperability.

COUNCIL POSITION ON DEPLOYMENT OF INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT SYSTEMS
On 2 June, the Council of the EU in in its Transport configuration agreed its position (general approach) on the revision of the Directive on the deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems, proposed by the European Commission in December 2021. This will allow the Council presidency to start negotiations with the European Parliament (trilogues) once the latter has adopted its position.

EU ADOPTS SIXTH PACKAGE OF SANCTIONS AGAINST RUSSIA AND BELARUS
On 3 June, the Council decided to impose a sixth package of economic and individual sanctions targeting both Russia and Belarus, which includes a series of measures intended to effectively thwart Russian abilities to continue the aggression against Ukraine.

INTERIM EVALUATION OF UCC IMPLEMENTATION
On 1 June, the European Commission published the interim evaluation of the UCC, which provides an assessment of the implementation of the UCC legal provisions and delivery of IT systems at EU and Member States’ levels from 1 May 2016 to end of December 2020.

COMMISSION UPDATES EU AIR SAFETY LIST
On 1 June, the European Commission updated the EU Air Safety List, which is the list of airlines that are subject to an operating ban or operational restrictions within the European Union because they do not meet international safety standards. Following the update, one airline certified in Russia, I Fly, has been added to the EU Air Safety List.

FMC PUBLISHES FACT FINDING 29’S FINAL REPORT
On 31st May, the US Federal Maritime Commission published the final report of the “Fact Finding Investigation 29” on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the US international ocean transportation supply chain. The report concludes a two-year investigation led by Commissioner Rebecca F. Dye.

EU-UKRAINE BUSINESS MATCHING PLATFORM
On 3 June, the European Commission launched the EU-Ukraine Business Matchmaking Platform to help export Ukrainian agricultural goods which are currently blocked in the Black Sea ports. Operated by the Enterprise Europe Network, the platform aims to bring EU and Ukrainian businesses together quickly so that they may find pragmatic solutions to the export of agricultural produce from Ukraine starting immediately.

TRANSPORT COUNCIL AGREES ON FIT FOR 55 TRANSPORT FILES
On 2 June, the Council of the EU adopted three general approaches on the transport-related files of the Fit for 55 Package, namely the Alternative fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), FuelEU Maritime and RefuelEU Aviation.

SPANISH SUPPORT FOR RAIL FREIGHT DUE TO WAR IN UKRAINE
On 16 May, the European Commission approved a €1.8 million Spanish scheme to support private rail freight companies in the context of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The scheme was approved under the State Aid Temporary Crisis Framework, adopted by the Commission on 23 March 2022, based on Article 107(3)(b) TFEU, recognising that the EU economy is experiencing a serious disturbance. Under the scheme, the aid will take form of direct grants.
