EP VOTES FOR BAN ON PRODUCTS MADE WITH FORCED LABOUR FROM EU SINGLE MARKET
At the end of April, the European Parliament in Plenary voted in favour of a new regulation to prohibit the sale, import, and export of goods produced with forced labour, marking a significant step in the fight against global human rights abuses.

EU READY TO NEGOTIATE EXTENSION OF ROAD TRANSPORT AGREEMENT WITH UKRAINE
On 29 April, the Council of the EU formally authorised the Commission to negotiate the prolongation of the road freight transport agreement with Ukraine. The agreement, first signed in June 2022 and extended until June 2024 grants bilateral transport rights to Ukrainian and EU hauliers in each other’s territories.

SHIPPING COOPERATION AGREEMENTS NOW FALL UNDER GENERAL COMPETITION RULES
25 April 2024 marked the end of the Consortia Block Exemption Regulation (CBER), under which shipping lines were exempted from competition rules when entering consortia under a certain market threshold. From this date, cooperation agreements between carriers fall under the general competition rules of Article 101(3) of the Treaty of the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU).

UNCERTAINTIES REMAIN AS EU FREIGHT INDUSTRY PREPARES FOR APRIL 30 LAUNCH OF UK BTOM SECOND PHASE
Traders and logistics service providers are preparing for the next phase of the UK's new Border Target Operating Model (BTOM), with physical checks on certain goods subject to veterinary and phytosanitary control (SPS goods) commencing from April 30. These checks will be conducted at specialized Border Control Points (BCPs). The UK Government is implementing a Common User Charge (CUC) to cover the costs of these controls.
