Last week, CLECAT attended the Smart Freight Week in Amsterdam. Organised by the Smart Freight Centre and gathering more than 550 participants, the three-day conference was the opportunity to take stock of the progress made by the freight transport community in its journey towards a decarbonised future.

A significant number of sessions was dedicated to the development of more precise and accurate guidelines on emissions accounting and reporting for logistics. Building on the publication of the ISO 14083 standard and the GLEC Framework 3.0 last year, additional research is being conducted to further improve the measurement of companies’ carbon footprint, including emissions from logistics sites, the development of harmonised emissions factors and verification procedures. With increased reporting obligations coming up, these projects will be crucial to ensure accurate reporting of emissions from logistics.

The conference was also the opportunity to take stock of the progress made by several programs looking into demand aggregation to decarbonise supply chains: the SFC-led Fleet Electrification Coalition aims to collectively put a massive number of electric trucks into operation over the next few years. The program also investigates public charging needs and collaborates with truck manufacturer and public charging operators to deploy charging stations where they are the most needed. Demand aggregation has also been successful in the uptake of low- and zero-emission fuels in shipping and aviation, with the ZEMBA and SABA programs respectively.

Finally, the conference highlighted that Book & Claim is becoming increasingly prominent in the logistics sphere: the development of a certification and verification framework for market-based measures will help companies building trust and ensure the integrity of book & claim systems to help fuel the transition to a greener future for all transportation modes.
