COMMISSION ESTABLISHES AI OFFICE

On the 30th May the Commission launched the AI Office to drive the development, deployment, and use of AI, ensuring societal and economic benefits while mitigating risks. Key to implementing the AI Act, the office comprises units for Regulation and Compliance, AI Safety, Excellence in AI and Robotics, AI for Societal Good, and AI Innovation and Policy Coordination.

With over 140 staff, the AI Office will enforce AI Act rules, support research and innovation, and collaborate with stakeholders. It aims to position the EU as a leader in AI by fostering trustworthy AI development and providing access to AI sandboxes and support structures. The office's activities will include preparing guidelines and developing codes of practice for general-purpose AI models, with the first organizational changes effective 16 June and the first AI Board meeting by the end of June.
