MEMBER STATES VOTE ON CHINESE ELECTRIC VEHICLE DUTY

The European Union is moving closer to imposing duties on electric vehicles (EVs) imported from China, following a key vote by the Trade Defence Instruments Committee. Despite a late effort by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to block the measure, ten Member States voted in favour of the duties, five opposed, and 12 abstained. This resulted in the Committee delivering “no opinion,” allowing the European Commission to proceed.

The Commission, following a year-long investigation into alleged unfair Chinese state subsidies, can now impose duties of up to 35.3%. These measures could take effect after 30 October, though there is still time for a negotiated settlement on minimum pricing for Chinese EVs.
