CABO VERDE SECURES PREFERENTIAL TRADE TERMS FOR FISH EXPORTS

The European Commission has renewed a derogation allowing Cabo Verde to benefit from preferential trade terms under the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP). Effective from 1 January 2024 to 31 December 2025, this renewal grants originating status to 6,300 tonnes of fish products (tuna, mackerel, frigate tuna) produced in Cabo Verde from non-originating fish. Cabo Verde faces challenges processing its own fish due to the limited presence of certain species in its waters and a shortage of long-distance fishing vessels. This derogation will enable Cabo Verde to access preferential tariffs for fish exports to the EU, supporting its fishing industry and economic development.
